I always check plates for indications that the people in line may be going in for seconds which would imply that the utensil they are using is in they community food is probably contaminated.
If there are no community serving utensils I try to make the first wave of patrons where the use of non communal utensils is probably safest.

Smart. I always keep an eye out at potlucks or bring my own food.
